The Effects of the Read/Write Web on Our Culture

Overview: What is the Read/Write Web?

The read/write web is also known as the "social web" or Web 2.0. Web 2.0 is considered a "second generation" of the Internet (Poore, 2016). The read/write web allows for a new level of interaction, communication, and collaboration that had not be previously possible before (Poore, 2016). The read/write web has been and continues to be a powerful tool for our society and has impacted our culture in many ways. Some of the ways that our culture has been impacted is through social media, politics, sports, and news.

How Is Our Culture Impacted?

Our culture is impacted in a variety of ways as a result of the Read/Write Web. Some keys ways that our culture has been impacted in through social media, politics, sports, and news.


Social Media: Social Media use has grown significantly in recent history. Social media is common among people of all ages and cultures (Kerpen, 2016). Some popular social media websites are Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest. Click here to go to a page with more information on these specific social media websites. The use of social media has impacted our culture in many ways, such as:
  • Allowing families, friends, coworkers, and past acquaintances to stay in contact.
  • Encouraging communication and collaboration among groups of people.
  • Creating ways for people to network with others for a variety of personal and professional reasons.
  • Making it possible for news and information about politics, news, and sports to spread quickly.
  • Enabling people to "hide" behind a computer screen to communicate with others, which could be done in a positive or negative way (Kerpen, 2016).
  • Designing an environment where people are able to express themselves in a public way.
  • Spreading awareness and information on national and international events.

Politics: Politics are impacted greatly by the read/write web. Political campaigns in particular use social media to target campaigns, genders, ages groups, and more. Some main ways the read/write web is impacting politics include:

  • Posting campaign views on social media
  • Broadcasting propaganda
  • Requesting online donations
  • The creation of multiple online polls (some with contradictory results in the same day)
  • Using Facebook to advertise and poll followers
  • Using social media as a direct interaction with politicians
  • Viral spread of rumors and "fake news"

Affects social media has on politics: news via social media

Sports: the read/write web has played a major role in all areas of sporting events from the online sale of tickets to updates from your favorite players. Twitter seems to be the driving force with almost every minor league, MLB, WMBA, NFL, NBA, NHL, and any other major team sport you can think of. They all have official twitter accounts to stay in constant contact with their fans. Fans at home also get a more private look into players lifestyle and past history because of the read/write web. Often personal information is released that can damage or enhance a players career. Players are also taking advantage of the branding opportunities that the read/write web allows them to have. Some ways that the read/write web is impacting sports are:
  • Being able to reach millions of viewers when games and interviews are broadcast online
  • Twitter feeds allow direct access to players and organizations
  • Score updates available
  • Player injury updates available
  • Team ranking updates available
  • Image branding used by players and organizations
  • deeper look into players personal struggles and triumphs

News: Read/write web has also affected news coverage in many ways. Getting a newspaper delivered to your door each morning has become a thing of the past. Now people hop right on the internet to access daily locate and world news. This has greatly impacted the production of hometown newspapers and also larger printing companies as well. People can access information right from their smart device. Some other ways that the read/write web is changing the way news is delivered are:
  • 30% of the general population gets their news from Facebook
  • YouTube channels are expanding into news coverage
  • All major news channels have a twitter to update their followers
  • Cell phones provide a "breaking news" page
  • News paper sales greatly depleted
  • Greater chance of false information
  • Channels are able to reach millions viewers at one time
